Q: What are Sylvanian Families or Calico Critters?
A: Sylvanian Families are little flocked (furry) animal dolls ranging from 3 - 9cm
in size, with movable limbs, adorable faces and changeable clothes.

They exist in family groups where there is usually a mummy, daddy, brother and
sister doll. Some family groups come with baby dolls or they can be bought
separately.

Sylvanian Families are available as various types of animals from rabbits to
squirrels, dogs, cats, mice, bears, sheep, pandas and more!

These Sylvanian Families dolls have homes, furniture, shops, transport, toys,
clothes, accessories and food just like us! Except they're much smaller of course.

In the UK, Japan, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, they are known as
"Sylvanian Families". In the US, they are better known as "Calico Critters".

Q: Are there any size differences between Sylvanian Families & Calico Critters?
A: Sylvanian Families (in UK, AU, NZ) and Calico Critters (in US) are the same size.
Only differences are the colour of some of the furniture. However, the Sylvanian
Families in Japan are slightly taller by millimetres only. Even though the
Japanese ones are slightly bigger, their accessories, furniture and clothes will
still fit regular Sylvanian dolls / figures.

Another difference of the Japanese Sylvanian dolls is that they have flat hands
which means they cannot hold objects like cups etc. The UK, US, AU and NZ
Sylvanian dolls have cupped hands (or 'open hands' as they're sometimes called).

Q: When and where did Sylvanian Families originate?
A: Sylvanian Families were originally made by a Japanese toy / gaming company
called Epoch Co. Ltd. in 1984.

Q: Are there any Sylvanian clubs in Australia?
A: At the moment, there's none. Official Sylvanian clubs exist only in the UK and
Japan. Also, the Japanese club and products only come in Japanese packaging
and instructions. The US may be releasing a Calico Critter club soon.

Q: Is there any Sylvanian Family clothes pattern books in English?
A: Official clothing pattern books for Sylvanian Families only come in Japanese.
No English versions have ever been released. However, story books in English
does exist but they're out of print.

Q: Is the Sylvanian Families DVD in cartoon or 3D?
And is it in Japanese or English?

A: Both Japanese and English versions of the DVDs can be found online.
Just make sure that the DVDs of origin can be played in your DVD player region
(PAL vs NTSC). The most recently released DVD is a CG / 3D animated three
part movie.

Q: What scale are Sylvanian Families dolls?
A: Slight height variations exist between different animals species and of course
between the babies and the adult animals. With that in account, Sylvanian Families
are roughly 1/16 to 1/18 scale in doll house terms. The most common and average
size for doll house miniatures is 1/12. Barbie and Momoko dolls are 1/6 scale.
